Bargain basements and cellars.

Within these unsettling times more and more people who were looking to move up the property ladder have become stuck in the property trap - not having enough equity in their house to buy a house of greater value and size. This however has created great opportunity for home owners to put down their roots and start on a journey of improving and extending their homes.

Mr and Mrs Taylor from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, have done just that by embarking on a basement conversion. With two small children and another on the way, their 3 bed semi was rapidly running out of space. With a wet, dark and damp four room basement which was used only for storage they decided to embark on their ambitious plan.

Mrs Taylor said ‘I don't know why we hadn't thought about it before. We have been looking to move to a bigger place for some time now, but with the property market as it is we couldn't find anything that suited our needs within our budget - and in any case the stamp duty alone runs in to thousands. So we decided to go for a basement conversion, this will give us 2 more bedrooms and en suite bathroom as well as a small home office space. The total cost of the project was £55,000 (including vat) but if you compare what we have now to what we would have got for the same money moving home - we have got ourselves a bargain.'

Barrett Kent Ltd, a local cellar and basement conversion specialist based in Ripon, North Yorkshire, have noticed an increase in enquiries for basement conversions and are looking optimistically into the future.

Mr Barrett, Managing Director of Barrett Kent Ltd, believes that it has never made more sense to convert unused basements.
